NOON LIGHTING
HEURISTIC REVIEW

the BRIEF
Determine the problem that is of the highest priority for improving a user's experience with the product, and come up with a solution to fix it.
heuristics review
Overall, the product on mobile devices and tablets pass our heuristic review in a positive manner. However, there were a few concerns we saw that we wanted to address and change.

the problem
The biggest problem and the one I chose to address is the lack of status and feedback. Even on the physical switches, there are so many different lights that blink. On the app you never really know if the light switches are trying to connect or not.
The proposed solution
The solution I came up with was to:
1. Provide better language on the instructions when setting up a new switch.
2. Provide animations to show the user exactly how long to press and hold the switch before it will start connecting.
3. Provide language and a status bar explaining where the user was in the process of setting up a new switch.

the test
The test began with an explanation of the product, and instruction that the test subject should be able to set up a new Noon Lighting switch, connecting it with the currently set up "Director".

A rough prototype of what the solution might look like was given to the test subjects to use as a reference when setting up a new switch.
There were two scenarios, one, where the switch failed to connect, and another where the connection was successful.

Following up
After the test concluded, some follow up questions were asked to insure the test did in fact create a better experience.
1. How many seconds should you press and hold the switch in order for it to connect to the app?
2. How did you know the switch was connected?
3. How did you know there was an error in the connection process?
Overall, the test went very well! The prototypes worked perfectly and the questions were able to be answered with my prototype better than with the original app.
